The Fortune At The Base Of The Pyramid

The term BoP, referring to those at the Base (or Bottom) Of the economic Pyramid, (those earning between $1.50 and $8.00 per day in $US equivalent) was coined by Dr. C.K. Prahalad, in his book ‘The Fortune At The Bottom Of The Pyramid – Eradicating Poverty Through Profits” in 2005, and has since been adopted by the IFC. The BoP is the world’s largest growth market and represents a majority population in 151 nations.

"BoP, a market of four billion people with $5 trillion purchasing power, are underserved and largely un-targeted by global and local enterprise, are penalized by their omission from the formal economy and pay higher margins on goods and services."

– IFC and World Resources Institute, “The Next Four Billion –Market Size and Business Strategy at the Base Of The Pyramid” 2007
